Land of the Lost and Found

Episode #041 of Paul and Storm Talk About Some Stuff for Five to Ten Minutes (On Average) alerted me to the fact that there is a version of “Land of the Lost” by 90s alternative rock stalwarts Everclear. It dates from their 2008 album, The Vegas Years, and it is quite different from the dozen or so versions The Nick Atoms conjured over the years.

Now, your Dr. Ted Nelson is a fan of Everclear, so this version sounds pleasing to his ears; your mileage may vary. Give us your thoughts on this version of the song, and weigh in on [manufactured controversy] the snubbing of The Nick Atoms for inclusion on the film soundtrack for the upcoming summer blockbuster, Land of the Lost. The Nick Atoms to be Honored at MarsCon 2010

The world’s greatest Sci-Fi band, The Nick Atoms, will finally receive the key to the city and the highest honor given to bands that are cool, but will never be famous: MUSICAL GUEST OF HONOR at the 2010 MARSCON in Bloomington, MN on March 5-7 in 2010.

This historic decision, from Dementia co-chair the great Luke Ski, was made after The Nick Atoms — Dr Ted Nelson and his two robots, Coburn and Wyngarde — returned from an adventure that had them labeled missing and presumed dead for the last five years. Dr. Ted returned from an alternate universe and rescued his amazing creations from the evil hands of Euro-synth-artist-musician-poet-astroprojectionist-painter-writer-nutritionist known as “Hot Snack Time“.

The trio has decided to put an end to the music but will be giving ONE LAST CONCERT of truly extra-ordinary proportions. You can see their reunion concert to say farewell at MarsCon where, if you have been reading and paying attention, they will be the MUSICAL GUEST OF HONOR at the 2010 MARSCON.

For many, this will be a first time to see the robotic rockers, and for others, a trip down memory lane. The Nick Atoms are excited by this development!

Many other bands and musicians will be at MarsCons 2010 — including Throwing Toasters and Nuclear Bubble Wrap — to celebrate the return of The Nick Atoms.

Rolling Stone magazine stated, “Not since John Lennon was shot has the world been so saddened as when The Nick Atoms vanished. It is so cool that people will get to see a The Nick Atoms concert. DO NOT MISS THIS! We will be getting our

badges for MarsCon 2010 early. This is the music event of 2010, people!”

This is the first award given to the Sci-Fi super group. Hot Snack Time remains missing and at large.

More Concert Goodness

In October 2005, fresh off the WB appearance high, The Nick Atoms rounded up two more bands from the show to play O’Gara’s Garage in St. Paul.

The Rice Channel bailed on us, but Johnny Trash came through with flying colors and opened our show.  We had a great time and played a whole lot of obscure songs that we never played at MarsCon.

One of our favorites was a cover of “Drink Till I Die” from Bad News (aka: The Young Ones).  Here’s The Nick Atoms pounding away complete with “rockstar fog”!

Enjoy!

A Long Time Ago…

Back in 2001, our first official full concert was at CONvergence (we played MarsCon a few months earlier as a kind of warm up).  CONvergence was the main reason why the band was formed.

We wanted to make this concert HUGE.  I think we played for an hour and a half.  We rehearsed nonstop.  We promoted the HELL out of the show.  12:00 MIDNIGHT!  We hung dozens of fliers up all over the hotel.

Around 11:30pm we got word that our show was being bumped in favor of anther band.  At midnight, the mainstage was PACKED from all the publicity we drummed up around the hotel, but instead of The Nick Atoms, they got “Ear Candy”:  Two girls dressed up like Devo, playing techno dance music on a keyboard.  (hrmmm… sounds familiar)

We finally got on stage about 1:00am and prepared to kick all ass.  The audience was very receptive as we closed the show with our most complicated number to date.  A song that I dont think we could ever tackle again…

The entire end credit music to Star Wars(1977).

Enjoy.

The Nick Atoms on VH1! (sorta)

Back in 2006, VH1’s “I Love Toys” series featured a little sketch entitled “Cobra Commanders Day Off” which sampled a very familiar song.

Did we get recognition for it?  No.

Do we care?  Well, considering how obscure it was, it probably wouldn’t have mattered.
